Mitchell Park Library & Community Center 10 Year Anniversary

This year marks a significant milestone for the Mitchell Park Library and Community Center as we celebrate our 10 year anniversary! It’s hard to believe that a decade has passed since we first opened our doors, welcoming individuals and families into a space dedicated to learning, growth, and community engagement. Join us as we reflect on the past ten years and look forward to an exciting future!

Celebrate With Us

To mark this special anniversary, we invite everyone to join us for a day of celebration on Saturday, November 16 from 11 AM to 2 PM. Festivities include speeches, architectural tours, performances and other activities, which highlight how this popular joint facility is used daily by Palo Alto and surrounding communities. See the full event schedule on our calendar.

The library will be giving out commemorative library cards for this event! These special edition cards will be available while supplies last, and are available for new card signups, and for existing PACL cardholders to exchange their current cards.

A Journey Through the Years

From the beginning, the Library and Community Center has served as a hub for knowledge and connection. Our mission has been to provide resources and programs that cater to the diverse needs of our community. Over the years, we’ve expanded our print and digital resources, added new technology, and developed a variety of programs that have enriched lives and fostered a love for learning.

Key Milestones

Grand Opening

The joint facility opened its doors to the community on December 6, 2014. Encompassing 56,332 square feet and built at a cost of $46.3 million, the Library and Community Center was funded by the 2008 Bond Measure N, the Palo Alto Library Foundation, and generous donors. Achieving LEED Platinum certification, it exemplifies our City’s commitment to sustainability. Located next to a beautiful park, it has become a popular destination for activities and programs that enhance civic life, promote learning, and encourage social and recreational interactions.

Increased Programming and Partnerships

Over the years, we have expanded our range of programs and services to include everything from Sensory Storytimes and English Language Learning classes to robotics workshops, cultural events, sewing classes, and home delivery services. These diverse offerings have enabled us to provide enriching community experiences for all ages.

Supporting Our Community Through the Pandemic

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we adapted by offering virtual programs, Book Bundles, curbside pick-up, and limited capacity browsing to ensure continued access to resources. As conditions improved, we implemented phased reopenings, gradually restoring hours and services to better serve our community while prioritizing safety.

Digital Transformation

In recent years, we have made great strides in enhancing our digital resources. Our redesigned technology learning center now features Reboot Services and innovative initiatives like AI Storytelling—one of the nation’s first AI library programs—along with Twitch streaming programs. This space also houses our Vintage Media Lab, allowing patrons to digitize old photos, home movies, records, and cassettes.

Community Impact

As we look back, the impact of the Library and Community Center on our community is undeniable. Thousands of patrons have walked through our doors, enjoying spaces and resources that support education, cultural enrichment, and personal growth.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate this milestone, we also look to the future. Our commitment to serving the community remains stronger than ever. We plan to introduce new programs, expand our digital resources, continue fostering partnerships, and enhance our outreach efforts to ensure everyone in our community feels welcome and empowered to participate. Your ideas and feedback are always welcome, as we strive to meet the evolving needs of our community.

Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey over the past ten years. Whether you’ve attended a program, borrowed a book, or volunteered your time, you have helped shape the Library and Community Center into what it is today.

Here’s to another decade of innovation, discovery, and delight! We can’t wait to see what the future holds.
