Zero Waste-Where to Start?

Sustainability has become such a buzzword that it often feels like an abstract concept tied to global systems, major policy decisions, or far-off environmental challenges. But it doesn’t have to be. Sustainability can also manifest in our communities and homes-in the everyday choices we make about what we buy, what we throw away (and how), and how we care for the places we live. As communities everywhere face the impacts of climate change—including rising temperatures, increased natural disasters, strained natural resources, and growing amounts of waste—small actions at the household and neighborhood level become increasingly important.

Zero-waste is one practical approach to sustainability in daily life. Zero waste is about reducing what we send to the landfill by rethinking consumption, reusing what we can, repairing items instead of replacing them, and recycling or composting appropriately. The “Zero” may seem so absolute as to be impossible but don’t be discouraged-perfection is not the point. Rather, it is about making thoughtful, realistic changes, taking steps to do less harm where possible for you.

Here in Palo Alto, zero-waste is a shared community priority. In 2016, the City of Palo Alto adopted an ambitious goal of reaching 95% waste diversion from the landfill by 2030. In order to meet this goal, the city has established a robust recycling and composting program for residents and businesses.

Sustainability Events

We have two events in May that help you on your way to creating a more sustainable home and contribute to our shared community goal of achieving zero-waste by 2030.

Saturday May 16th join us for Zero Waste at Home, a presentation from Zero Waste Palo Alto about their work to help the city meet its zero-waste goals and how you can help in your own home.

Thursday May 28th to get your broken items fixed by Silicon Valley Repair Café. A group of handy volunteers will be on hand to help mend your broken household items such as clothes, electronics, small appliances and more. Save money and divert waste from the landfill at the same time!
