The War That Saved My Life written by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley is a touching and heartful Historical Fiction book set during WWII. Set in the war filled England of the 1940s the story follows a 10 year old girl named Ada. Like many of the children who were sent away from London in the midst of WWII, this story follows a 10 year old girl named Ada and her brother Jaimie in their journey to the countryside.
While you may think that this is just a historical fiction book about WWII, it is a touching story about a girl trying to fit in. You see Ada was born with a club foot and has spent most, if not her entire life trapped inside of their small apartment in London. Ada’s mother forced Ada to stay inside of their apartment ashamed of Ada’s foot. Ada has to overcome the challenges that her club foot presents such as learning how to stand and walk.
I would highly recommend The War That Saved My Life to anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction or coming of age stories. While I would mostly recommend this book to middle aged readers I think that there is a lot that this book has to offer and older readers would also enjoy this book. I especially enjoyed listening to this book on an audiobook because the reader of the book really highlighted the different characters and the emotions that they faced.
Ultimately this book is a must read for readers who enjoy historical fiction and touching coming of age stories.
