Policy Regarding Excessive Heat in Library Buildings

When the temperature reaches 90 degrees in a designated public area of a Library facility, the affected Library will close for the remainder of the day. This is done to protect the health and safety of both customers and staff.

After approval from the Director of Libraries or her designee, Library staff will follow approved procedures for an orderly closure that includes the securing of the building, placement of signage, appropriate message placement on the library’s website and phone number and the like.

Staff scheduled to work on this day will be given the opportunity to work in another Palo Alto City Library or take vacation or other similar leave.

The Library closed because of excessive heat will resume normal business hours the following day.
