Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) is a vast and culturally diverse region that spans countries from Morocco in the west to Iran in the east, and from Turkey in the north to the Arabian Peninsula in the south. This region is home to a rich tapestry of languages, traditions, religions, and histories that have shaped much of the world’s cultural, political, and social landscapes.
SWANA is known for its ancient civilizations, such as Mesopotamia and Egypt, which have contributed significantly to human knowledge in fields like mathematics, astronomy, and literature. The region is also a crossroads of major world religions, including Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, and it has influenced global philosophy, art, and architecture.
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to understand the complexities of this area in a way that moves beyond simplified or outdated stereotypes. This includes acknowledging the diverse identities and experiences of the people who live there, and the region's ongoing role in global conversations about culture, economy, and geopolitics.
Join us throughout the month of April as we explore the rich heritage of Southwest Asia and North Africa, fostering deeper understanding and appreciation for the region's diverse stories!
