Bring Your Class to the Library
A library visit is a great way to encourage a love of reading and help students discover all the library has to offer! Palo Alto City Library welcomes school classes of all ages to visit our five library locations. Whether your students are exploring the library for the first time, discovering new books, or learning how to find information, our Youth Services Librarians are excited to help make your visit fun, engaging, and meaningful.
What can your class do during a visit?
Here are a few of the activities we can offer:
- Take a behind-the-scenes tour
- Enjoy a custom storytime featuring a theme of your choice
- Get library cards for each student*
- Browse the collection and find books to check out
- Receive research assistance
- Participate in library-themed games or activities
- Eat lunch or enjoy a snack in the garden or on the patio
*For PAUSD educators: PAUSD students have Student Success Cards, opens a new window. To help students check out books more quickly, please bring a list of student names so librarians can easily look up their cards. For all other educators: We can send library card applications ahead of your visit for parents to complete. If you collect the completed applications and return them to us during the week before your visit, our staff can prepare the library cards in advance.

How should I prepare for a class visit?
Here are some helpful tips for bringing your class to the library:
- Talk with your class ahead of time about what to expect during the visit.
- Set expectations for how many books students can check out. Many teachers suggest one or two books per student.
- Request your visit by filling out the form, opens a new window and communicating with your librarian.
- Have parents complete library card applications in advance if students will need cards.
- Bring parent volunteers, if possible, to help students navigate the new environment.
- Let your librarian know on the day of your visit if you have any time constraints or if there are special circumstances we should be aware of.
How else can educators connect with the library?
Our librarians are happy to support local schools in a variety of ways. We can:
- Visit school assemblies
- Host a table at school and/or PTA events
- Visit classrooms to share reading recommendations or lead a read-aloud
- Give presentations about Summer Reading
- Create book lists to support your curriculum
