The Escape Room written by Megan Goldin is one of the fastest paced, psychologically twisting, thrillers that I have ever read. This is the first book I read by Megan Goldin and safe to say it made her my all time favorite author. This novel shows how ambition and power can bring out the worst in people. The storyline follows four coworkers, Vincent, Jules, Sylvie, and Sam, who work at an exclusive Wall Street investment bank. They are invited to participate in an escape room, what they think is a team-building exercise. Instead, they find themselves trapped in an elevator which quickly turns into a dangerous game of survival.
As the time passes, tensions rise and long held secrets begin to reveal themselves. Each character has a past that connects to the company in ways in which they would have never expected. Through these secrets and revealed clues, it becomes clear that this “game” is not random.
The story switches between the present, where they are fighting to survive, and the past, which helps to explain how they ended up there. This book is interesting and kept me as a reader very entertained.
Overall, Goldin does a great job showing how greed, competition, and the desire to succeed can affect people’s choices. All of these themes and morals are keen for the reader to grasp and learn off of. The characters are flawed and some can be found unlikable, but this makes the story feel very realistic and easy to visualize. The Escape Room is suspenseful, intense, and perfect for readers who enjoy mysteries with unexpected twists and a darker message about corporate life. All the while, it is something that will have the reader wanting to keep turning the page, and should definitely be your next read.
