The Book of Caraval will transport you to a dark, romantic, wonderland-like world where the Mad Hatter is calling the shots. The book follows 17-year-old Scarlett, who has dreamed of taking her sister Donatella to the magical game of Caraval for years. After years of writing to the mysterious owner, Legend, the opportunity finally arrives. When she and her sister travel to the magical island, Donatella is kidnapped, and Scarlett is pulled into the wonderful yet dangerous game. To find her sister, Scarlett must navigate the world of Caraval, where nothing is as it seems.
With so many twists, the book never fails to surprise and leaves me with my jaw on the ground. This book was one I couldn’t put down and would kill to read for the first time again. Furthermore, Stephanie Garber’s writing style is extremely descriptive, and each character has a unique personality. Each detail was its own, but still fit perfectly into the story. As the pieces started together, I felt as if I was solving the mystery alongside Scarlett.
Additionally, Caraval is not just an amazing book but also introduces themes of trust and family. With so many decipetions in the world of Caraval, how would Scarlett know whom to trust? Throughout the book, Scarlett realizes that her family is not the one she was born to, but the people who would sacrifice anything for her. While Scarlett is finding her Donatella, you’ll be finding values of your own. Whether you're a reader or not, Caraval will certainly keep you up until midnight. Transported to the World of Caraval, it will be hard to remember it’s just a game.
