On the right side of my piece is my mother, who was recently diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. After undergoing a mastectomy, she made the courageous decision to pursue a year-long chemotherapy treatment—choosing to be proactive despite some doctors reassuring her it wasn’t necessary. Her determination to eliminate any possibility of recurrence reflects her unwavering strength and resilience.
In my artwork, I highlighted the infusion line connecting her port site to the IV stand, which is bordered with blooming flowers. The flowers represent the light at the end of the tunnel of chemotherapy and the growth, renewal, and hope the process has taught her. Through this piece, I wanted to capture not only my mother’s journey but also the optimism that defines it. The vibrant flowers sprouting from the chemo stand represent life and healing, while her determined expression conveys her courage as she faces challenges head-on, stepping into a future filled with hope.
