Teen Library Advisory Board (TLAB) — Membership Responsibilities

Program Calendar

For program administration, the Library uses these participation terms (dates may be adjusted annually to align with school calendars):

  • Fall Semester: September–December (4 months)
  • Winter/Spring Semester: January–May (5 months)
  • Summer Session: June-August (3 months)
    • Summer Informational session
    • Summer Hang-Outs: Teen-hosted craft or board game programs at any library location
    • Additional Volunteer Opportunities: Expanded ways to earn service hours throughout the summer

Orientation: Each member must attend an in-person staff-led orientation once per year (orientations are offered at the beginning of every semester)

Renewal / Reapplication Each Semester: Membership is semester-based. To continue, members must confirm continued interest/availability and be an active member.

Remaining Active

To remain active each semester, members must complete all of the following:

A. Meeting Attendance

  • Attend at least 50% of scheduled meetings during the semester
  • Members should notify Senior YS Librarian/ TLAB Advisor in advance when they cannot attend

B. Required Activity (choose at least one per semester)

  • Participate on a program planning team and complete assigned tasks
  • Submit one teen program idea with basic details, like audience, format, and supplies needed (this option requires approval of mentor and being a member in good standing for at least one semester)
  • Support one outreach community event
  • Assist with one library program
  • Create a staff-approved booklist (8-10 books recommended)
  • Submit a brief reflection on learning and recommendations (ex. Library services, social media, purchase suggestions, streaming services)

C. Conduct and Reliability

  • Follow all library rules; maintain respectful, inclusive behavior in-person and online
  • Members must follow staff direction regarding privacy and safety

Tracking Volunteer Hours

TLAB members are responsible for tracking their own volunteer hours and assignments through Better Impact. The library cannot document hours that are not tracked in Better Impact.

Service Projects / Hours

Hours may include: program support, teen collections/advisory feedback, booklists, community events and staff-approved project work.

Accommodations and Equitable Access

The Library will consider reasonable accommodations and alternative participation methods (e.g., modified hours, flexible tasks) when feasible to reduce barriers to participation.
